What is a "Shadow President"

In the Westminster system of government, which is to say the government in the United Kingdom, the party out of power, also known as the opposition party, appoints what are called shadow ministers. Think of ministers as the equivalent of cabinet members in the United States.

If we had this system in the US, assuming a Republican President which we are shortly to have, the Democrats would appoint a "Shadow Secretary of State" a "Shadow Secretary of Defense" etc.

The job of these shadow ministers is to develop and publicize detailed policy positions they would implement if they had the actual job and thus show alternatives for the public to evaluate when deciding whether the party in power is doing a good job.

A Shadow President, therefore, would look at the issues going on in the country and issue policy positions to address them as alternatives to what the sitting President is offering.

At this point it would not surprise me if anyone reading this for the first time is thinking "OK, Steve, I get what it is, now what gives you the right to appoint yourself "The Shadow President?"

My somewhat amused response would be, "Does one need a right to appoint themselves to a position that does not exist?"

Anyone is free to accept or reject/ignore anything I have to say, a right which you would have if I said it or not. We have free speech in the US. at least up until now, and this is my exercise thereof.

See you in the comments. Or not.
